My first memory of a body-mind experience was at the age of five. I was in the hospital, and a nurse taught me how to relax my body so she could administer a shot. It was very empowering at such a young age to make that connection of the body-mind.
One summer, as a pre-teen at summer camp, two of my counselors returned from India after studying with the Maharishi and introduced us to hatha yoga and meditation practice. I was intrigued; it felt very natural to me and made for an interesting summer.
The real turning point came more than 35 years ago when I received a college graduation gift from my boyfriend’s mother, a yoga teacher. She gave me four classes with her own yoga teacher, New York City-based Allan Bateman. I began taking additional classes, and he became my teacher and mentor. My life changed immediately from his unique approach to hatha yoga, which influenced my own teaching from that moment forward. Although I explored other careers for several years while taking these classes, it wasn’t long before I knew I wanted to dedicate myself to the profession and teach private yoga therapy to others.
I am fortunate to meet and work with a wide variety of individuals who seek yoga for numerous reasons and conditions, with many continuing well past their original motivation for seeing me.
When you begin to practice yoga, it feels like being introduced to yourself in a new way. You start to develop a deeper relationship and understanding of yourself. Yoga facilitates observation, allowing you to notice your thoughts and perceptions, and fosters significant growth through self-actualization. Many continue their practice throughout their lifetime, just as I do. There is always room for growth physically, spiritually, psychologically, and beyond. Yoga can truly make you a better person.
